The acronym for the LGBT movement has changed considerably over the years. The first transformation happened around 1980, when the term LGB (lesbian, gay and bisexual) replaced the term GLS (gay, lesbian and lesbian) in the media and in LGBT communities. A few years later, the letter “T” was included to represent transvestites, transsexuals and transgender people. Over time, new letters were included  to include people with other sexual orientations until arriving at the acronym used globally: LGBTQIA+. This sexual orientation is mistakenly confused with “indecisiveness”; Transsexuals , transvestites and transgenders: these terms refer to individuals who do not identify with their biological gender. For example, when a person assigned the male gender at birth for biological reasons does not identify with it, but rather with the female gender; Queer : people who transition between female and male genders.

The term “queer” belongs to the English language and was used pejoratively for a long time. The movement appropriated it to give it a positive meaning; I ntersexuals: individuals who have feminine and masculine characteristics; Asexuals : people who do not feel sexual attraction to others, regardless of their gender. LGBTQIA+ - what the acronym and movement really mean As human sexuality is multiple and complex, the (+) symbol was added to include those who are not included in the acronyms mentioned above . Those who frequented these establishments were arrested and suffered reprisals from police authorities as a way of “correcting” their behavior. . Several protests arose against police brutality, giving rise to the “Gay Liberation Day” parade on June 28, 1970, in New York, to fight against prejudice.
